World Health Organization (WHO) defines childhood cancer as “cancers that arise in children and adolescents younger than 15 years of age”. Cameroon is a lower-middle income country with a population of about 30 million persons and it is estimated that approximately 37.7% live below the poverty line that is 813frs per day. Childhood cancer is a severe disease striking children and their families unexpectedly. An estimated 12,400 American children and adolescents under age 20 were diagnosed with cancer in 2000. Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death in children in developed countries as 90% of childhood cancer cases occur in low- middle-income countries (LMICs), where mortality can be 4-5 folds higher compared to high income settings. Each year, an estimated 1,390 children are diagnosed with cancer in Cameroon, and a significant portion, possibly as high as 4 out of 5, do not survive more than five years after diagnosis. Cameroon faces a significant cancer burden with high mortality rate and growing number of new cases this is due to delayed diagnosis. Early childhood cancer detection reduces mortality, particularly in LMIC contexts where community awareness, improved understanding of early warning signs and symptoms, identification of cancer cases and integration of vital referral pathways into existing health systems are crucial to improved childhood cancer outcomes. We are dedicated to improving the access to care and quality of life after treatment through innovation, research, advocacy and collaborative partnership. Together let us fight childhood cancer.
